What we do

Around Town is a free guide to what is happening near you in the East Bay: family days, music, markets, classes and community nights. No ads, no accounts, and we never sell anyone's email. Neighbors use it to plan their week, and we would love them to find your events there.

Why share your calendar

  • More neighbors see your events, at no cost.
  • Every event links straight back to you, with your name on it.
  • Set it up once. Your events update by themselves, so there is no extra posting.

What we need

Just a link to your calendar. Any of these works:

  • an iCal / .ics link (it may start with webcal://)
  • an RSS feed of your events
  • a public Google Calendar link
  • or simply the address of your events page. If we cannot read it automatically, a person will look at it by hand.

Not sure what to send? Send what you have. We will figure it out and write to you if we need anything.

How to find your calendar link

Google Calendar
  1. On a computer, open Google Calendar and click the gear icon, then Settings.
  2. On the left, under “Settings for my calendars”, pick your calendar.
  3. Under Access permissions, tick Make available to public.
  4. Scroll to Integrate calendar and copy the Public address in iCal format (it ends in .ics). Paste it below.
Apple Calendar / iCloud
  1. Open Calendar on a Mac, or iCloud.com/calendar in a browser.
  2. Click the share icon next to the calendar, then tick Public Calendar.
  3. Choose Copy Link and paste it below. It starts with webcal://, which is fine.
Outlook
  1. In Outlook on the web, go to Settings, then Calendar, then Shared calendars.
  2. Under Publish a calendar, pick your calendar and set permissions to Can view all details.
  3. Click Publish, then copy the ICS link and paste it below.
Website event plugins (WordPress and others)
  • The Events Calendar: your feed is usually your events page address plus ?ical=1 (for example yoursite.org/events/?ical=1). Or use the “Subscribe to calendar” button on your events page and copy the iCal link.
  • Modern Events Calendar: in its settings, turn on the iCal export. Then copy the link from the “Add to calendar” or “Export” option.
  • Most other plugins have a “Subscribe” or “Export .ics” link. If you cannot find one, send us your events page address.
Squarespace, Wix and Eventbrite
  • Squarespace: on an Events page, add ?format=ical to the page address (for example yoursite.com/events?format=ical). If that opens a file or text, copy the address.
  • Wix: Wix Events does not give a public feed, so send us your events page address.
  • Eventbrite: send us your organizer page address (it looks like eventbrite.com/o/your-name-123). We will take it from there.

What happens next

  1. We test your link to make sure we can read it.
  2. You get an email with a preview of the events we found, and a link to confirm it is really you.
  3. We add your events to Around Town. They refresh automatically, so new events show up on their own.

Every event shows your name and links back to you. You can ask us to remove your calendar at any time, no questions asked.

Cost: free, always. Account: none needed. What we keep: only your calendar link and a contact email.

We use your email only to write to you about this calendar. See our privacy page.

Questions

Does it really cost nothing?

Yes. Around Town is free for organizers and for neighbors. No ads, no fees, no account.

Will you change or rewrite my events?

No. We show your events as you wrote them, with your name and a link back to your own page.

My calendar is private. Is that a problem?

We can only read public calendars. Make the calendar public (the steps above show how), or send us your events page address instead. Private events never need to be shared.

Can I take my calendar off later?

Any time. Write to us and we remove it, along with your contact details.

I only have one event. Can I still be listed?

Of course. Post a single event, free.

Questions? Write to [email protected]. A real person reads it.

Where do you want to look?

One choice, used on every page. Change it any time.

1. An area

2. Or pick cities
