Privacy
Around Town is a free community project, a Breger.org community project. It has no ads and no accounts, and it does not sell or share your information.
What we collect
- Newsletter: your email address, the cities and interests you pick, when you signed up and confirmed, and a one-way hash of your IP address as proof of consent.
- Event submissions: the event details you enter plus your email, used only to contact you about that listing.
- Visits: anonymous counts only. Our own server adds one to a daily tally for the kind of page viewed (home, events, an event, a city, and so on). We do not use Google Analytics or any third-party tracker, and we keep no cookie, ID or fingerprint for counting. We do not store your IP address, your browser details, or anything that could identify a visit or follow you from one day to the next.
- Your place: if you enter a ZIP, town or area (or pick cities), we save it in first-party cookies on your device (
nearholds the ZIP or area name and the distance, andcitiesthe list of cities) so Around Town remembers you. These are the only cookies we use. They hold no name, email or ID, and they are not shared. If a place is saved, we add one to an anonymous daily tally for that ZIP or area (a count, never linked to you). - Waitlist: if you ask to be told when Around Town opens in your area, we store your email and the town you typed (optional), only to tell you when it opens. We delete them on request or when you unsubscribe.
- Volunteers: if you volunteer (you sign up on breger.org), we keep your name, email, roles and a record of your hours, used only to run the program and to confirm your hours when you ask. We delete them on request.
- Visitors from places we do not cover: we add one to an anonymous daily tally for the region (state or country, and the town for the US) your connection appears to come from. We never store your IP address, and nothing is kept that identifies you.
- “Use my location” is optional. Your browser asks permission and works out the nearest ZIP on your device. Only that ZIP is sent to us. Your exact location is never sent or stored.
- Weather: our server fetches the forecast from the National Weather Service using the ZIP's map point. Nothing about you is sent to them.
- Ads: if you arrive from an ad link, we add one to a tally of ad visits for that page. We only note that the link was an ad link; we never keep the ad click ID. Automated visitors (search crawlers and bots) are tallied separately. Nothing is sold or shared, there are no third-party trackers.
- Newsletter topics or ZIP are kept only if you choose them when you sign up, and you can unsubscribe and delete them any time.
Your choices
Every email has an unsubscribe link, and the unsubscribe page lets you delete your information entirely. You can also reply to any Around Town email and ask us to remove you.
Email service
Emails are sent through a transactional email provider that handles delivery only. We never give your address to advertisers or other organizations.
Questions? Send us a note. This is a beta; this policy will be updated as the project grows.
